Temporary Is Subject to Change
Reflection
Have you been treating something temporary as though it can never change?
Key Scripture
II Corinthians 4:18 (NKJV)
While we do not look at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen. For the things which are seen are temporary, but the things which are not seen are eternal.
Devotional
The things in front of us can demand all our attention. A diagnosis is visible. A bank balance is visible. Family tension, an unanswered question, or a closed door can feel impossible to look past. Paul doesn't tell us those things aren't real. He tells us they're temporary, which means they're subject to change.
We have a choice about where we'll focus. If we look only at what is happening in the natural, it will begin to determine what we believe. God's Word brings eternal truth into view. It reminds us that what we see today isn't the only reality at work and doesn't have authority to write the ending of our story.
David didn't deny that Goliath stood before him. Abraham wasn't unaware of what was happening in his physical body. They had something greater to consider: a word from God. Faith doesn't say, I don't see a problem. Faith says, What I see isn't the only information I have. God's promise belongs in the picture too.
Every time you open your Bible, you allow eternal truth to speak to a temporary situation. The Word redirects your attention from what appears immovable to the God for whom all things are possible. You don't need to minimize what you're facing. Bring it honestly before Him, then keep His promise before your eyes and in your heart. Temporary conditions can change. His Word remains forever.
Application
Identify one situation you've been viewing as permanent. Replace that conclusion with this declaration: This is temporary and subject to change; God's Word is eternal.
Prayer
Father, help me see my circumstances through the truth of Your Word. Keep me from treating temporary things as permanent, and fix my attention on what is eternal. In Jesus' name, amen.
