Look After God Speaks
Reflection
Are you interpreting what you see before allowing God's Word to shape your perspective?
Key Scripture
Genesis 13:14–15 (NIV)
The Lord said to Abram after Lot had parted from him, “Look around from where you are, to the north and south, to the east and west. All the land that you see I will give to you and your offspring forever.”
Devotional
When Abram and Lot separated, Lot looked first. He chose the Jordan Valley because it appeared lush, well-watered, and prosperous. His decision was shaped by what his natural eyes could see. Abram looked too, but only after God spoke and told him where to direct his attention.
There is a way of looking before God speaks, and there is a way of looking after He speaks. Before His Word enters the picture, we may judge everything by its current appearance. A situation looks hopeless, delayed, or diminished. Once God speaks, faith allows His promise to determine how we understand the same landscape.
God told Abram to look north, south, east, and west. The land before him hadn't suddenly changed, but the Word gave him a different vision of what it represented. He didn't have to wait for every detail of the promise to appear before he began seeing through what God had said.
You don't have to wait until the storm is over or the problem disappears to see differently. Open God's Word and let Him speak into what you're viewing. His promise may reveal possibility where you saw only limitation, peace where you expected fear, or a future where you felt stuck. Faith doesn't ignore the landscape. It looks again after God speaks and allows His eternal truth to shape what the heart sees.
Application
Bring one unresolved situation before God as you read Scripture today. Ask Him to show you how His Word changes the way you're looking at it.
Prayer
Father, keep me from judging my future only by what I see. Speak through Your Word and teach me to view every circumstance through Your promise. In Jesus' name, amen.
