Faith Can Hear Him Coming

Reflection

What could change if you listened for Jesus instead of waiting for your circumstances to look different?

Key Scripture

Mark 10:47 (NKJV)
And when he heard that it was Jesus of Nazareth, he began to cry out and say, ‘Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!’

Devotional

Bartimaeus couldn't see Jesus coming through Jericho. Sitting beside the road, he had no visual evidence that his moment was near. But he heard that Jesus was passing by, and what entered his ears awakened a response in his heart. He cried out, expecting that Jesus could change his life.

His circumstances hadn't changed when he began calling. He was still blind, still beside the road, and still surrounded by a crowd. Yet what he'd heard about Jesus gave him more information than his condition could provide. When Jesus called him forward and asked what he wanted, Bartimaeus answered clearly: he wanted to receive his sight. Jesus told him that his faith had made him well.

Faith doesn't require us to pretend a need isn't real. It gives us a greater truth to receive in the middle of it. Bartimaeus couldn't see Jesus, but hearing was enough to move him toward hope. He refused to let what he lacked keep him from responding to the One who was near.

You may not see the change you're believing for yet. That doesn't mean nothing is happening or that God is absent. Keep listening to what His Word reveals about His character, power, and promises. Let what you hear build expectancy inside you. Faith can hear Jesus coming before circumstances offer any visible reason to believe. When His Word reaches your heart, don't be afraid to call out and respond.

Application

Read Mark 10:46–52 aloud. Then tell Jesus specifically what you're believing Him to do, allowing what you've heard about Him to shape your request.

Prayer

Jesus, help me hear You above what I can and can't see. Let Your Word awaken faith and expectancy in me, and give me courage to respond when You call. Amen.
