Come With an Open Heart
Reflection
Is there a disappointment you've been allowing to shape how you hear God's promises?
Key Scripture
Luke 8:18 (NKJV)
Therefore take heed how you hear. For whoever has, to him more will be given; and whoever does not have, even what he seems to have will be taken from him.
Devotional
Two people can sit in the same service, hear the same Scripture, and leave with very different responses. One receives the promise with expectancy. The other keeps thinking, But you don't understand what I'm facing. Jesus tells us to pay attention to how we hear. Our hearts can be open to God's Word, or our circumstances can become a filter through which we hear everything.
That filter doesn't always look like outright rejection. Sometimes it sounds like, I've heard this before. Other times it's the memory of a painful season that rises up before we've even finished reading a verse. We may know what the Bible says and still struggle to welcome it personally. A teachable heart makes room for God to speak beyond what our past has taught us to expect.
You can come to Him honestly. You don't have to pretend you aren't carrying hurt, confusion, or worry. Tell Him what's weighing on you, and place those cares in His hands. Then ask Him to help you receive His Word. That simple willingness matters. Instead of deciding in advance that a promise couldn't apply to your situation, you can say, Father, I'm listening. I want what You have for me.
In Luke 8:15, Jesus describes good ground as those who hear the Word, keep it, and bear fruit with patience. An open heart keeps holding on after the service ends. Give the truth you've heard room to take root. You can bring your whole story to God and still be willing to hear something new from Him today.
Application
Before you read Scripture today, name one care you're carrying and give it to God in prayer. Then read with this response: Father, help me receive what You're saying.
Prayer
Father, I bring You my hurts and questions. Help me hear Your Word with a teachable heart and hold on to it with patience. I'm open to what You have for me. In Jesus' name, amen.
