Ask Again

Reflection

Are you relying on what God said last time instead of asking what He's saying now?

Key Scripture

II Samuel 5:23 (NKJV)
Therefore David inquired of the Lord, and He said, “You shall not go up; circle around behind them, and come upon them in front of the mulberry trees.”

Devotional

David had already faced the Philistines and won. The first time they attacked, he inquired of the Lord, received a strategy, followed it, and saw victory. When the Philistines returned, David could have assumed the previous plan still applied. Instead, he inquired of the Lord again.

This time, God gave him a completely different strategy. The enemy looked familiar, but the instruction had changed. David's confidence wasn't in a method that had worked before. It was in the God who knew exactly what that particular moment required for complete victory.

Past success can quietly become a substitute for present dependence. We remember how God led us through a similar decision, relationship, treatment, or opportunity, so we simply repeat the approach without asking again. But yesterday's direction was given for yesterday's assignment. Faith stays attentive enough to ask again.

You aren't bothering God when you return for counsel. You're acknowledging that He sees details you can't see. He may confirm the same direction, or He may lead you around another way. Either response is valuable because victory is connected to hearing and following His present instruction. Don't let familiarity convince you that you already know the plan. Bring the situation before Him with a listening heart. Ask again, and give Him room to direct this step rather than assuming that yesterday's strategy must be today's answer.

Application

Revisit one current situation that feels familiar. Ask God whether the previous strategy still applies, and pause long enough to receive fresh direction.

Prayer

Father, keep me dependent on Your voice instead of familiar methods. Give me humility to ask again and discern the instruction You have for this moment. In Jesus' name, amen.
